Bible in 90 Days – Day 8 – Leviticus 1-14
Today’s readings contains vast detail about the bloody sacrifices required to atone for sin.
It is an important reminder of what sin does.
- Sin is horrific: think of the killing floor at a slaughterhouse. That was the scene at the tabernacle. Our sin causes this. We are right to be repulsed by it somewhat.
- Sin has consequence; they were to lay their hand on the head of the animal before it was killed as if to say “I caused this…”
- Sin is expensive: a bull, a goat, a lamb. These are not abundant and cheap. They were to be sacrificed whenever sin occurred! Imagine a constant stream of sacrifice coming in to the tent (and eventually a temple).
This is what our sin is like and it is important to reflect on it. This is why we read and reflect on Leviticus. It puts what Jesus did, and what he accomplished, in perspective.
