Christ's birth began a rescue mission that includes both our present salvation through the Great Exchange of our sin for his righteousness, and the future restoration of all things at his Second Coming. Through Colossians 1, we see that Jesus has already rescued us from darkness into his kingdom and offers redemption, while also being the creator and sustainer of all things. This Christmas celebration encompasses both the joy of our current salvation and the hope of Christ's ultimate rescue when he returns.
