Jesus teaches that external religious practices and rituals cannot make us right with God because our fundamental problem is a corrupted heart that produces sinful thoughts and actions. Using the analogy of a disobedient child who polishes doorknobs instead of cleaning their room, the message illustrates how we often substitute easier religious activities for true obedience to God's commands. Only God can solve our universal heart problem - we cannot fix ourselves through external efforts alone.
