Jesus declares himself the good shepherd who calls his sheep by name, and those who truly belong to him will recognize his voice and follow him with the assurance of never being cast out. This teaching comes directly after the Pharisees expelled a man from the synagogue for believing in Jesus following his miraculous healing from blindness. The sermon emphasizes the security and comfort found in being one of Christ's sheep, guaranteed never to be rejected even when the world turns away.
